Whirlwind White, 1 minute 45 seconds,
©2003
In Whirlwind White a series of objects come spinning
out of a white oblivion at the viewer and disappear as though
they had flown out of the screen. The objects range in size
from miniature dollhouse furniture, to kitchen utensils, clothing
and people. As though the viewer had entered Alice’s Wonderland,
what was once small is now large and what was once large is
now the same size as a tiny object. The video is reminiscent
of a dream or a trauma, where everyday life breaks the boundaries
of gravity and proportion, flying out of our control. When installed, Whirlwind White is projected over a stairwell, creating
the sensation that the objects are falling into empty space
and that there is no firm ground to stand on.
